Caldwell RTT


Welcome to the Caldwell Rural Training Track (RTT) Family Medicine Residency. The RTT is a branch of the main Full Circle Health Program that is designed especially for broad-spectrum rural family medicine training. Here in Caldwell, our faculty is passionate about the training of Family Medicine Physicians. We are an unopposed program supported by the entire medical community of Caldwell and the surrounding areas. Therefore, we are able to provide an extremely broad training experience for our residents. Trainees essentially become a member of the medical group when they come to Caldwell as a resident, allowing for great professional and personal flexibility. This is very important because we recognize that balance is necessary to make well-rounded, fulfilled physicians.

The Caldwell RTT began in 1995 with one resident per year, graduating our first resident in 1998. In 2006, due to the program’s success, it was expanded to two residents per year (six residents’ total). In 2011, once again, the program expanded to three residents per year (nine residents’ total). All of our graduates are board certified family medicine physicians. Of our graduates to date, 88% are serving in rural areas.

The first year of training is completed in Boise with the core residency program. The second and third year residents complete their training in Caldwell (about 30 miles west of Boise). Medical students interested in the Caldwell program must submit an application through ERAS separate from the Boise application. Applicants invited to interview in Caldwell will also be interviewing in Boise on the following day.

Saint Alphonsus Medical Clinic

The Caldwell RTT site is based at Saint Alphonsus Medical Clinic which is a large group of ten family physicians and five pediatricians. The clinic is located in a 56,000 square foot office building physically attached to West Valley Medical Center in Caldwell. This close proximity allows residents to go back and forth between the clinic and the hospital with ease, helping them to be involved with any interesting cases that may be going on in either location.

Hospital duties during years two and three will be performed at WVMC. West Valley is a 150-bed (ten critical care beds, seven intermediate care beds, eight pediatric beds) community hospital that has been serving the community well for over 50 years. Residents are welcome to gain experience in the entire hospital. They can commonly be seen in the busy ER, the endoscopy suite, the critical care unit, the OR, and even the cardiac catheterization lab. Food is provided for residents in the cafeteria and doctor’s lounge free of charge. The hospital is small enough that one can quickly learn everyone’s name, and large enough to provide a broad experience for trainees.

Idaho Surgery Center

A number of physicians in our group spend time performing endoscopic procedures at the nearby Caldwell Surgery Center, outpatient surgical facility owned by MVMC. Our local surgeons spend time at the Center as well, and residents receive privileges there, enabling them to participate in procedures when time allows.

Samantha Portenier, MD

Program Director Caldwell

Samantha Portenier was born in Ontario, Oregon and grew up in northern Idaho. She went to undergraduate school on a rodeo scholarship and after graduating from Lewis Clark State College in Lewiston, Idaho did a year of graduate research at the University of Idaho before going to medical school at the University of Nevada, School of Medicine. In Nevada, she focused on primary care and rural medicine and returned to Idaho to do residency at the Caldwell Rural Training Track. After graduation in 2000, she joined the faculty of the family medicine residency and became the site director of the Caldwell Rural Training Track in 2004. She completed her specialized training as Program Director in 2013. When not at work, she is active with her family ranching, training performance horses and traveling to her three children’s rodeos where they participate.

Jocele Skinner, MD

Associate Program Director - Caldwell RTT

Dr. Skinner was born in Nampa, Idaho and raised on a ranch in Eastern Oregon. Dr. Skinner graduated from The College of Idaho in Caldwell, Idaho, and then attended medical school in St. Louis, MO at Saint Louis University. The rural lifestyle and love of the high desert and sagebrush brought her back home to Idaho for residency. She attended the Full Circle Health Rural Track in Caldwell, and then stayed on to join the same medical group after graduation. She volunteers as the team physician in Homedale, the small farming town where she now resides. Dr. Skinner is married to George, and has two children, Catie and Jack. She has never been able to really give up ranch life, and her family has collected quite the menagerie of farm animals over the years. In her personal time, she enjoys knitting, cooking, reading, and gardening.

Richard Augustus, MD

Dr. Richard Augustus is a hospital medicine specialist in Caldwell, ID and has been practicing for 23 years. Dr. Augustus has been the Chief Medical Officer of West Valley since 2013.  A graduated from University of Utah School of Medicine in 1996 he specializes in hospital and family medicine. He is passionate in training of the residents and the residency program.

Brenton Baldwin, MD

Dr. Brenton Baldwin attended and graduated from Loma Linda University School of Medicine. He is a 2016 graduate of the Caldwell Rural Training Track Residency program. Caldwell is fortunate to have Dr. Baldwin’s experience and rural training in Family Practice now in our community. He is a highly regarded instructor and devotes many hours of his time to the residency program.

Lindsay Orme, MD

Family Medicine

Dr. Orme is a graduate of the University of Washington Medical School. She is also a 2017 graduate of the Boise Residency Program. Her experience in Family Medicine covers a broad spectrum, from training medical students, in-patient medicine, and obstetrics to providing primary care to a diverse population at a family medical clinic.

Michael Roach, MD

Family Medicine

Dr. Michael Roach, M.D. graduated from the University of Idaho with a B.A. in English, completed additional coursework at both the University of Idaho and Northern Arizona University, and then attended medical school at Saint Louis University School of Medicine, graduating in 1987. He then completed a family medicine residency in 1990 at the Saint Joseph’s Hospital Family Medicine Residency in Phoenix, Arizona.

Roger Wyatt, MD

Family Medicine

Dr. Roger Wyatt, M.D. is a board-certified family medicine physician at the Saint Alphonsus Medical Group Elm Clinic in Caldwell. From Arizona to St. Maartin, Salt Lake City and Idaho, his education and medical training is as expansive as the academic achievements for which he has been recognized. He is committed to his patients and the community. As a dedicated partner in the wellness of his patients, Dr. Wyatt brings a passion for listening to each patient’s unique needs to educate and empower them to reach their wellness goals.

Ammon Roberts, DO

Caldwell RTT Program 2022

Ammon was raised in a family of nine kids on a potato and onion farm in Eastern Oregon. Growing up in a large family on a farm instilled in me the importance of hard work and perseverance. I remember working long days in the blistering heat until my muscles ached. At times, I felt I could not continue, but I knew that my family relied on me as a vital member of the team to accomplish our goals. During those especially long days, my father engrained in me a tenacity to accomplish and persist through even the most difficult of circumstances.

My health care experience prior to medical school was primarily in emergency medicine. During my time as an emergency room scribe, I participated in a team that helped people during their critical moments. This gave me an appreciation of the impact a physician has in the lives of our patients, and their families. I also came to realize the importance of teamwork and team inter-reliance, especially during stressful and busy times.

During my time in clerkships, I found that I really enjoyed taking care of people, especially those that had similar backgrounds as myself. My family medicine rotation was in a small rural underserved community, very similar to the one I had grown up in. Many of the patients that I was seeing had little medical knowledge and felt helpless and overwhelmed when dealing with the complexities of health care. They looked to us for help, and I soon found my own niche, as I became an advocate for them by providing skilled and complete health care.

My unique background, education, and life experiences have guided me into a career in family medicine. I feel family medicine would bring out the best parts of myself and help me achieve my future life goals of living and caring for people in a rural community. I look forward to being part of team where I can be a valuable member to help bring quality health care to our community.

As I strive toward becoming a family medicine doctor, I seek a residency program where residents support each other and work in harmony as a team. I look forward to the opportunity of caring for patients in a meaningful way and hope to perform as an emissary for the residency program I join. I am eager to learn the skills necessary to become an exceptional physician in an ever-evolving field, and to gain the knowledge that will aid my future patient care.

 

Ashley Carvalho, MD

Caldwell RTT Program 2022

Ashley was born and raised in Boise, ID, and attended the College of Idaho in Caldwell where she majored in biology and history. She had the opportunity to spend her junior year in Ireland as an exchange student, and after graduation, she returned to Ireland to do a Masters in Public Health at Queen’s University in Belfast. She loved it so much, she decided to stay at Queen’s for medical school. During her training, she had opportunities to complete international rotations and learn about healthcare systems in other parts of the world, including the UK, Ireland, Australia, and Peru. Not only did she gain valuable insights and perspectives on global and international health during these rotations, she also saw many amazing places – all the way from Macchu Picchu to the Harbor Bridge in Sydney, Australia.

While abroad, she made many wonderful friends who became her family. The welcoming and tightly-knit communities she was a part of in Ireland reminded her of home, and this inspired her to return to Idaho to practice family medicine in the community she loves so much.

Some things Ashley likes to do for fun: explore the outdoors (including the many hiking trails and hotsprings Idaho has to offer), run local races, cook and bake, travel (next on her list: Iceland and Japan), play board games, read anything and everything, go to trivia nights, play piano and ukulele, and play with her black lab, Tuck!

Ashley is thrilled to be back on Idaho soil and is so excited to be joining the Full Circle Health family!

Stephen Richardson, DO

Caldwell RTT Program 2022

I’m proud to be a native of the beautiful Pacific Northwest. I was raised in Camas, WA  near the scenic Columbia Gorge, where I first developed a love for the outdoors. I spent a significant portion of my childhood camping amongst the Douglas Firs, hiking up Cascade peaks, spelunking through volcanic caves, and running through the forest trails behind my house. To this day, whenever I have a free weekend, there’s a good bet I’ll be heading out to the great outdoors.

Having a close brother with epilepsy introduced me into the medical world. Days, sometimes weeks, spent with my brother in the hospital were not unusual. From check-ups to extensive brain surgeries, I have been there with my brother. I saw the impact that physicians can have in the life of a patient. That has been a significant motivator for me on my pathway to where I am now.

After serving a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, I attended Brigham Young University where I earned my degree in Neuroscience. Medical school brought me back to the Pacific Northwest, where I attended Western University of Health Sciences COMP-NW. I knew from an early point that family medicine was where I wanted to end up. I value relationships and felt that this is where I could make the most impact, so I volunteered in rural, underserved clinics during medical school. After completing a sub-internship in Caldwell, I was thrilled to match with the Full Circle Health – Rural Training Track. I look forward to serving the people of Idaho.

Just a little bit more about me – one of my hobbies is collecting more hobbies. I enjoy (in no particular order) running, hiking, weight-lifting, architecture and design, gardening, home construction/renovation, singing, playing the piano, painting, serving in the community, reading, mountain-climbing, traveling, cooking, church activities, humanitarian work, woodworking, whistling and probably a few more.

When not busy with patients, Tracy enjoys reading action and thriller novels, browsing used book stores, making gourmet budget meals, working out, listening to audiobooks, attending comic conventions, doing yoga, bike riding, and hiking.

Craig Cowling, DO

Caldwell RTT Program 2023

There are so many things that Craig enjoys, but chief among those is being a father to his 3 wonderful daughters. Teaching them how to live and explore their world is truly a joy! In Craig’s free time, he enjoys going to the mountains and keeping tabs on the Elk, Deer, Bighorn Sheep, and black bear populations around Boise. Long term goals include hospital and procedure based medicine, osteopathic and physical medicine, diabetes, weight loss, and pregnancy care.

Lauren Hanlon, DO

Caldwell RTT Program 2023

I was born and raised for most of my life in Ventura, CA. I came from a family of competitive swimmers and all-around water lovers so I had the privilege of spending most of my life in and around water. I swam competitively for 15 years, ultimately swimming for the University of Redlands women’s swim team. While at Redlands, I majored in Biology and minored in Chemistry and Spanish. I was also fortunate enough to meet my husband Ryan during our freshman year, and we have been together ever since. Between undergrad and medical school, I wanted to experience the world outside of my comfort zone and improve my Spanish language skills. Ryan and I lived, worked, and traveled in Chile and Argentina for seven months. We met extraordinary people, saw some of the most beautiful places in the world, and thoroughly enjoyed our time there. After returning from South America, I was accepted into medical school at Pacific Northwest University (PNWU) in Yakima, WA.

My medical interests include: Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment (OMT), Sports Medicine, Women’s Health, and Emergency Medicine.

Some things I like to do for fun: I now compete with the Boise Barbell Olympic Weightlifting Club in Boise. I love being part of the tight knit group and continuing to improve my strength and technique. I also love anything to do with water (as mentioned above), hiking with our dog, Max, being the pack mule during Ryan’s triathlon races, and sampling Ryan’s new cooking masterpieces.

Andrew Harding, DO

Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine

Born in Utah, and raised in Twin Falls, ID where most of my family still lives, I grew up the 4th of 5 kids. Growing up in southern Idaho helped me develop a love for the outdoors and adventure, where I was actively participating in scouting and church activities. After serving a 2 year mission for my church in Australia, where I continued to develop a love for travel, outdoors and camping, I attended Arizona State University and played club waterpolo for Mesa, AZ. 

I am a father of 2 wonderful kids, the best pooch, and an avocado tree. I enjoy working out, boating and playing basically any sport out there. 

My love for family medicine stems from the ability to do so much and not be limited by my specialty. I hope to one day further expand my practice by completing a sports medicine or emergency medicine fellowship. 

Brooke Mischkot, MD

Oregon Health & Science University School of Medicine

Brooke was born and raised in Salem, Oregon. She attended Oregon State University where she studied exercise and sports science. She went on to become a family medicine scribe and attended medical school at Oregon Health & Sciences University. During medical school she grew her interests in advocacy and research, particularly in women’s health and health disparities.

In her time outside the hospital, Brooke enjoys spending time in the sunshine running, swimming, camping, hiking, and playing with her dog Phoebe. She also loves to cook and try new restaurants. She is thrilled to move to Boise where her sister, brother in law, and nephew live. She is looking forward to training here and exploring all that Idaho has to offer!

Taylor Sorenson, DO

Pacific Northwest University College of Osteopathic Medicine

Taylor was born and raised in the small town of Aurora, UT. Growing up in an underserved area is where her passion for rural medicine began. She noticed the hardships her small town community faced when it came to obtaining appropriate medical care and the frequent struggle to find a committed family practitioner. Most of Taylor’s free time growing up was spent outdoors, whether that be on a four-wheeler, go-kart, boat, or wake-surfing. She would not change her small town upbringing for anything as it provided her the opportunity to discover why small town living and its communities are the best.

She attended undergraduate school at Southern Utah University where she majored in Biology and where she also met her husband Noah. She then attended Pacific Northwest University for medical school with her eyes always set on rural family medicine. She served as the Family Medicine Club Vice President, became a member of the Sigma Sigma Phi Honor Society, and was selected to join the Gold Humanism Society by her peers. She also traveled to Uganda, Africa for a global medicine trip during the 1st year of medical school as global medicine is another huge passion of hers. She then completed her clinical training right here in beautiful Boise and the surrounding areas. 

Currently Taylor spends her free time hiking with her husband and two dogs (Maple and Milo), traveling, and spending as much time with her family as possible. Her medical interests are Behavioral Health, Global Health, and Rural Medicine. 

Taylor is thrilled continue her training in Idaho and is so excited to be joining the Full Circle Health family!

Community

Caldwell is the first town and western entrance to the magnificent and picturesque Treasure Valley and is located on the beautiful Boise River. The city is situated in an ideal location between he Owyhee mountain range to the southwest and the Sawtooth range to the East which provides  ample camping, hunting, fishing and other outdoor activities. 

The County Fair and the Caldwell Night Rodeo, Buckaroo Breakfast and Cinco de Mayo, are just a few of the places and events celebrated by the City of Caldwell. Southwest Idaho is also well known for its whitewater rafting, multiple ski resorts, great hiking trails, mountain biking, and awesome camping and fishing locations. 

Or try your luck panning for gold in Silver City, one of Idaho’s historic mining towns located just south of Caldwell.  In addition to being so close to the great outdoors, Caldwell is just 30 minutes west of Boise, which is Idaho’s capital and home to cultural events, shopping, entertainment, restaurants, the Boise philharmonic and a yearly Shakespeare Festival.

COVID Vaccination Required

At Full Circle Health, we follow CDC guidelines to help keep our patients and staff safe. We enforce masking protocols for everyone over the age of 2, encourage COVID vaccination for all eligible patients, and have protocols in place to keep our patients and staff safe. 

We require COVID vaccination for all staff, faculty, students and residents. 

To keep access to care open for all of our patients and the community, we have enacted the use of virtual appointments and respiratory clinics to ensure all patients can be seen. We follow CDC and NIH guidelines for the treatment of COVID-19. These treatments are always evolving and we stay up to date with all official and evidence-based recommendations as they come, with the support of local infectious disease specialists. At Full Circle Health, we do not offer prescriptions for therapies that are not evidence based nor recommended. 

We are proud of the contribution Full Circle Health faculty and residents have made over the course of the pandemic to help support even our most vulnerable community members. This program has and will continue to advocate for evidence-based medicine, healthcare access for all, and the continuation of preventative health care even in the face of a pandemic.

 

APPLICATION PROCESS:

The application process allows the faculty and residents of the Full Circle Health to thoroughly review each applicant’s credentials prior to extending an invitation to interview. Applications will only be accepted through the ERAS system. Interviews will be scheduled during the fall/winter. The interview allows the applicant an opportunity to discuss the program with the faculty and residents; due to the COVID-19 pandemic, all interviews will be held virtually. Deadline for receiving applications is October 21, 2020. After all applicants have been interviewed, the faculty and residents rank applicants in order of preference and submit the list of names to the National Resident Matching Program.

CRITERIA:

  • Only ERAS applications are accepted: applicant must contact their medical school.
  • International medical graduates must have a passing score on USMLE Step 1 and Step 2.
  • Applicant should not be more than two years out of medical school.
  • Three letters of recommendation are required. One must be a letter from a Family Medicine physician with whom you have worked.
