Kelly Wilkinson, MD

Sports Medicine Fellowship Director - Boise

Dr. Wilkinson  is a former all-American collegiate lacrosse player at University of California Davis and NCAA Woman of the Year in 2004.  Dr. Wilkinson has always loved athletics and was lucky to grow up in small fishing and lumber town on the North Coast of California, competing in soccer, basketball, softball and track while graduating as valedictorian of Fort Bragg High School in 1999. 

She naturally became interested in sports medicine after a knee injury in college disrupted her collegiate lacrosse career and challenged her identity as an athlete. After graduating summa cum laude with a bachelor and then master’s degree in Food Science at UC Davis she briefly worked as a food tasting panel sensory scientist in Cincinnati, OH.

Working in the food industry for brief time compelled her to return to medicine seeking a more humanistic and altruistic career. She completed medical school at University of California San Diego and found Family Medicine specializing in sports medicine to be a natural fit.  Dr. Wilkinson completed her residency at Sutter Family Medicine Residency in Sacramento, CA and Fellowship in Primary Care Sports Medicine at Full Circle Health in 2015.  She joined Full Circle Health as the primary care sports medicine fellowship director in 2016. 

Dr. Wilkinson enjoys helping athletes of all abilities and encouraging others to be physically active for health and longevity.  Outside of medicine when she is not chasing her small children she enjoys trail running, hiking, snowboarding, refereeing lacrosse, and baking.

Scot Scheffel, MD

Assistant Director

Dr. Scheffel graduated from the University of Nevada, Reno, with high distinction. He joined Drs. Wade and Lewis in September of 2000 to pursue the treatment of medical and orthopedic sports related conditions. He is a team physician for Boise State University, Boise Hawks Baseball and Centennial High School. Dr. Scheffel is an Associate Clinical Professor for the University of Washington. He is also the Director for the primary care sports medicine fellowship and oversees the sports medicine training for local family medicine residents. He enjoys golfing, skiing, mountain biking, and spending time with his family. Jaclyn Cooperrider, MD

Sports Medicine Associate Fellowship Director

Dr. Cooperrider was born and raised in Idaho. She graduated from Eagle High School in 2006 and went on to attend the University of Redlands where she played two years of varsity soccer, worked as an athletic training aide, and graduated summa cum laude with a B.S. in Biology. She attended medical school at University of Washington, graduating in 2014 and returned to Idaho to complete a residency in family medicine and a fellowship in sports medicine. Dr. Cooperrider left the states to move to New Zealand where she was a rural locums physician for 1 year, after which she returned to Idaho to begin her current practice. She is also passionate about women’s health. In her free time, she enjoys traveling, running, mountain biking, backpacking, practicing her Spanish, teaching yoga, and spending time with her husband, daughter, and dog.

Andrew Curran, DO

Faculty

Dr. Curran is a graduate of Nampa High School. He attended medical school at Midwestern University in Chicago, Illinois graduating summa cum laude in 1994. He stayed in Chicago to complete a residency in orthopedic surgery at Rush University. His sports medicine fellowship was done at Harvard affiliate New England Baptist Hospital with the Boston Celtics in 1999. After practicing in the Treasure Valley for 16 years he joined Idaho Sports Medicine Institute in January, 2017. He is a team physician for Boise State University and Skyview High School. Dr. Curran enjoys time in the outdoors doing a variety of activities including skiing, mountain biking and wakesurfing. He also likes participating in medical mission work and is a devoted husband and father of three children.

Nathan Grimm, MD

Faculty

Dr. Grimm is a native of Idaho and received his undergraduate degree from Boise State University. After graduating, he spent two years doing orthopaedic clinical research as a career before attending medical school at the University of Utah School of Medicine. During medical school he took time off to do a research fellowship at Vanderbilt University focusing on cartilage research and a condition known as osteochondritis dissecans of the knee. After medical school he attended Duke University for his Orthopaedic Surgery Training. Here he was able to work with the Duke University athletics, continue doing clinical research, and further develop his interest in Sports Medicine. Also, during this time, he traveled to France to further learn shoulder arthroscopy and shoulder arthroplasty techniques from Dr. Pascal Boileau, world-renowned shoulder surgeon.

After finishing his training at Duke University, he then completed a Pediatric and Adult Sports Medicine Fellowship at the University of Connecticut and Elite Sports Medicine at Connecticut Children’s Hospital. Here he worked with the UConn Men’s and Women’s basketball, football, soccer, and ice hockey teams. He also worked with Quinnipiac University ice hockey team. Dr. Grimm has made substantial contribution to orthopaedic research having written 23 book chapters and 46 research articles in addition to numerous presentations. He is a passionate educator, researcher, and surgeon who has joined the ISMI team in August 2020. His surgical interests are in hip arthroscopy, open and arthroscopic surgery of the shoulder and knee in athletes, and shoulder replacement surgery.

Kirk Lewis, MD

Faculty

Dr. Lewis received his undergraduate and medical degrees at the University of Michigan, where he was a two-year captain for Michigan’s football team. He completed his orthopedic surgery residency and fellowship in sports medicine at UCLA. He also sought additional fellowship training in orthopedic trauma in St Gallen, Switzerland, and pediatric orthopedics at the University of California, San Francisco. Dr Lewis joined his long time friend and colleague Dr. Wade and the Idaho Sports Medicine Institute in 1985. Dr. Lewis took a leave from ISMI from 2007-2011 where he was an Associate Professor at the University of California Davis. He was involved in education with orthopedic residents and their sports medicine fellowship program. He was also a team physician for the Sacramento Kings and the Sacramento Monarchs. Dr. Lewis has a strong interest and experience in global health and medical volunteerism. Jennifer Miller, MD

Dr. Miller, a Boise native, was a volleyball, basketball and track athlete at Boise High. She joined the ISMI team in 2004. She is a team physician for Boise State University, Boise Hawks Baseball and Borah High School. She serves on the Boise School District sports medicine curriculum committee, the Make-A-Wish board, and is the medical director for Special Olympics Idaho. She enjoys skiing, waterskiing, travel, and time with her husband and two sons. Jason Johnston, MD

Dr. Johnston hails from the south via Virginia, Georgia, Alabama and Texas. He made his way out west to attend the Family Medicine residency in Boise, ID.  Jason enjoys outdoor activities and time with his dogs and wife, Gracie. He hopes to expand his broad-based family medicine training with a sports fellowship to help his patients live healthier and more active lives. Dr. Johnston is caring, personable, and delightful to work with.

Be sure to be on the lookout for his cowboy boots and big smile on the sideline at the BSU games next fall as he works with the ISMI!

Joie Florence, MD

2021-2022

Joie Florence is a proud Idahoan, born and raised.  Growing up here, she learned to love the Idaho outdoors and the wonderful people who live here.  She graduated from Bishop Kelly High School in Boise in 2009.  She then studied Exercise Science at University of Idaho in Moscow.  She participated in the Greek system as a Kappa Alpha Theta and she worked as a gymnastics coach at Palouse Empire Gymnastics.  She was able to serve a free health clinic, Snake River Community Clinic in Lewiston, Idaho. 

After graduation from U of I, she began medical school at University of Washington’s Idaho WWAMI program.  She felt lucky to do most of her training in areas of Idaho including Moscow, Hailey, and Boise.  Through her training, it became clear that family medicine would be the perfect fit for her. 

When her nose is not in the books, Joey loves playing board games, traveling, dancing and spending time with her loved ones (humans and dogs).  Her love of the outdoors continues to grow; when she finds the time she rock climbs, hikes and bikes.  She also has a passion for organized sport.  Her first love was gymnastics then later track & field.  In college, she found a love for Ultimate Frisbee.  Now, she participates in local city-league volleyball.  Her love of sports spilled over into professional life as a passion for sports medicine.  Joie laughs easily and feels joy from practicing medicine.  She looks forward to growing her medical knowledge with Full Circle Health.  She feels blessed to continue to deepen her Idaho roots. 

Kevin Mangum, DO

2020-2021

Kevin was born and raised in southern Utah with his three siblings. He received an Associate of Art degree in Accounting from Dixie State University, and then transferred to the University of Utah where he finished up his Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology. He and his brother moved to Portland Oregon where they received their Bachelor of Science degree in Human Biology and a Doctor of Chiropractic degree. They owned and operated their practices together before Kevin decided to attend medical school. He went to medical school at A.T. Still University – School of Osteopathic Medicine in Arizona and then completed his family medicine residency at Creighton University School of Medicine Phoenix Family Medicine Program.

He loves spending time with his wife and four children. They enjoy hiking, camping, cycling, soccer and skiing. He is excited to be completing his fellowship in primary care sports medicine.

Zechariah Wilson, MD

Zech is originally from Las Vegas. He attended undergraduate at Chapman University where among other things he worked as a physical therapy aide. He attended University of Nevada, Reno for Medical School and is currently a chief resident with Full Circle Health in Boise. He is known for his thoughtful care of patients and engagement in his resident community as a leader in many things including his involvement with curriculum development and as a caring colleague. Zech lives in Boise with his wife Sherri who works at St Luke’s Hospital as a nurse. He enjoys outdoor sports and Dodgers baseball; he sees sports medicine as a core foundation of his future family medicine practice.

Jaclyn Cooperrider, MD

Jaclyn was born and raised in Boise, ID with her older brother and sister. She received her Bachelor of Science degree in Biology at University of Redlands in Redlands, CA where she also played soccer, worked in the athletic training department, and met her now-husband. She received her Medical Degree from the University of Washington where she participated in multiple community outreach projects including a student-run free clinic and Tar Wars. . Jaclyn has a special interest in sports medicine and palliative care and hopes to pursue a fellowship in one of these areas. In addition, she is a yoga instructor and continues to investigate how yoga can be integrated into the medical care of her patients. In her free time, Jaclyn loves spending time outside playing soccer, ultimate Frisbee, camping, yoga, and running with her dog, Marley. Jaclyn completed her Sports Medicine Fellowship during the Summer of 2018, she now practices in New Zealand.

Dr. McCoy was raised in Spokane, Washington where he grew up loving sports and the many outdoor activities available in the Pacific Northwest. After graduating from Central Valley High School he attended Brigham Young University – Idaho for one year prior to serving a two year church mission in Venezuela where he learned to speak Spanish fluently. When he came home from Venezuela he transferred to Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah where he received his bachelors degree in Biology with a minor in Chemistry. Dr. McCoy went to medical school at Midwestern University and attended the Arizona campus College of Osteopathic Medicine. He stayed in Arizona for his family medicine training where he spent most of his extra time volunteering for local high schools and at other sporting events as preparation for his specialty training in sports medicine. Dr. McCoy worked as the Primary Care Sports Medicine Fellow at Full Circle Health and spent most of his time working at the Idaho Sports Medicine Institute where he worked with the Boise State University student athletes. He also worked with the local high schools providing game coverage for their events.

Dr. McCoy now works as the Primary Care Sports Medicine physician in Grand Junction, Colorado working at Rocky Mountain Orthopaedic Associates. He provides coverage to four local high schools; working with local Division II university student athletes. He provides fracture care, US guided injections, diagnostic MSK ultrasound, Tenex procedures and general musculoskeletal care for the community.

Andrea Buckler was born and raised in Vancouver, WA. She attended Seattle Pacific University for her undergraduate degree while playing volleyball. After college, she spent a year teaching high school and coaching volleyball before getting married and moving to Germany. Andrea spent almost a year there before moving to Kansas City, MO to attend Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences – College of Osteopathic Medicine. During her four years in Kansas City, she also obtained an MBA in healthcare leadership from Rockhurst University. For her internship, Andrea moved to Cuyahoga Falls, OH for a traditional rotating internship at Summa Western Reserve Hospital. She then transferred to Spartanburg, SC to complete residency in family medicine at Spartanburg Regional Hospital. Andrea and her husband, Evan, enjoy playing volleyball, watching movies, spending time with their families, and spoiling their dog, Molly. They are ardent Timbers fans and are members of the Timbers Army.

Dr. Anderson is the current Sports Medicine Fellow for the 2011-2012 year. He is originally from Utah where he attended Weber State University. He graduated from the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine in 2008. He did residency at the McKay-Dee Family Medicine program with an emphasis on Sports Medicine and worked with his alma-maters’ athletic teams. Dr Anderson enjoys running and biking and outdoor activities with his wife and son. Rob Amrine, MD

Dr. Amrine graduated from the Idaho Primary Care Sports Medicine Fellowship in 2011 after completing residency at the Full Circle Health in 2010. Currently, he is working in his home town of Missoula, MT at the Western Montana Clinic. There, he provides primary care sports medicine services and links the family medicine and orthopedic departments. He is the team physician for the Missoula Maulers, Junior A Hockey Team, and is the Medical Director for the Missoula Marathon. He enjoys bicycles and skis.
